LOUISVILLE — Coming into their jamboree, both Noxubee County and Caledonia needed to answer some questions.
For Noxubee it was all about quarterback play – who could possibly take over for KaMario Taylor? For Caledonia, could they address last year’s Achilles heel and limit their turnovers?
Neither found any answers, although the Tigers came away with a 7-0 win in the jamboree that was more of a controlled scrimmage where each team got eight plays on offense for five series.
The game’s only score came on the opening drive for Noxubee County as Jykeim Goodwin found Christon Glenn on a 5-yard touchdown pass.
“I thought we did some good things, but we made some mistakes, and we have to clean up the little things. We got to get the offensive skill guys going and get the right chemistry going,” said Noxubee County coach Teddy Young. “Jykeim didn’t do bad, but I think he missed a lot of reads. The whole unit we have to get the chemistry going with quarterback and receivers. Defense played great causing a lot of turnovers and negative plays.”
The Noxubee County defense forced four turnovers. Caledonia only managed to cross midfield three times.
The Tigers open the regular season at home on Friday and will break in a new turf field as they host defending MHSAA Class 2A state champion Heidelberg.
“We got film on Heidelberg, and they are very explosive on offense and defensively they fly around to the ball and they’re very well coached and he has them going in the right direction,” Young said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge. It’s going to be a tough battle.”
The Cavaliers will once again lean on the run-heavy wing-T offense. Quarterback Xander Tate along with running backs Cole Garner, Bryson Fountain, Jordan Davis and Holden Counts will lead the offense.
Caledonia opens the season at home Friday against Itawamba AHS.
“Putting the ball on the ground was our biggest enemy last year and we started on the wrong way this year. Missed assignments and all that, so we got to clean that up. There were a lot of ugly mistakes especially with the young guys and there were some not expected. We got to get a lot better between now and Week 1 and that’s why we play these jamborees,” said Caledonia coach Michael Kelly. “We got to get some guys healthy, minimize the mistakes. Proud of the defense for bowing up in the red zone and growing up some guys on that side of the ball. We will respond and get better next week.”
In other jamboree action New Hope beat Choctaw Central 39-0, Heritage Academy beat Leake County 7-0 and West Lowndes tied Ethel 6-6.
