Columbus has found a new man to lead its football program, the school district announced Tuesday.
Benjamin “Chris” Morgan, a 2009 graduate of the school and former Falcon football player, has been hired as the team’s next head football coach.
Morgan replaces Barrin Simpson, who left the program at the end of last season after spending two years in charge. Morgan brings 13 years of coaching experience, mostly gained in Louisiana, with stops at Woodlawn in Baton Rouge, East St. John in LaPlace and St. Helena College and Career Academy in Greensburg. At St. Helena, Morgan also coached boys basketball and track.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Morgan return home to Columbus and Columbus High School to lead our football program,” said Craig Chapman, superintendent of the Columbus Municipal School District. “As a former Falcon who played on Falcon Field, he understands the deep connection between the program and our community, as well as the responsibility of guiding student-athletes to succeed both on and off the field.”
Morgan earned a bachelor’s degree in sports coaching from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master’s degree in sports administration from Arkansas State University.
He takes over a program that went 1-9 last year and hasn’t had a winning season since 2016.
“My goal is to restore Falcon pride in the football program in the community, in the school and in the players,” Morgan said in the release. “I appreciate this chance and the help I already have. With(out) God’s grace and mercy, none of this is possible. Together, let’s create a top-tier football program. My goal is to build champions on the football field. In the community and in the classroom.”
