Lyon College got the best of both of the Mississippi University for Women’s basketball teams on Tuesday in Batesville, Arkansas, and handed both squads a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to begin conference play.
After a strong outing in the first half, the Owls’ men’s team (1-4, 0-1) couldn’t maintain the momentum in the second frame and fell 82-59 for its fourth loss of the season. The Owls and Fighting Scots were tied at 34-34 at halftime, but Lyon came out of the break and kickstarted a barrage of points that gave them a 10-point lead in the first nine minutes to pull away for good, thanks in part to a total 14 makes from the free-throw line and six 3-pointers.
Five Owls scored double-digit points with Trent Walker and Tray Huguley both with 12 points, Devin McCaine had 11 points and both Jackson Reid and Joe Haze Austin finished with 10 points each. The Fighting Scots found their advantage on the boards, outrebounding MUW 45-22 for 21 second-chance points. Colbie West led Lyon with 19 points, Kenneth Brown had 13 points and seven other Fighting Scots chipped in at least four points.
Despite a strong offense showing in the final two quarters, the W’s women’s basketball team was kept out of the win column for the fifth straight game to start the season in an 85-71 loss to Lyon College.
The Fighting Scots powered through for a 45-23 lead at halftime but were outscored 48-40 the rest of the way by the Owls, who got 20 points, four rebounds and three steals from Conley Langford. Mia Bowen had 18 points and eight rebounds, Jakayla Smith notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards and Tamera Ross posted 10 points, four rebounds, five blocks and five steals. It just wasn’t enough to counter a game-high 27 points from Lyon’s Alyssa Abascal. Three more of her Fighting Scot teammates piled in double-digit points, and as a team Lyon College won the battle for the boards 68-47.
The Owls’ men’s team is back in action at 3 p.m. today at home against Belhaven University while the women’s team takes on Huntingdon College at 3 p.m. in the Millsaps Tournament then plays Austin College at 1 p.m. Sunday.
