LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Mississippi State men’s golf team picked up its first piece of silverware this season at the Cullan Brown Collegiate tournament.
The two-round tournament was briefly interrupted by bad weather, but the Bulldogs returned to the course atop the leaderboard on Tuesday and finished the job.
As a team, the Bulldogs combined for a score of 557 (11-under par), narrowly edging out runners-up Kentucky, the tournament hosts, in the team standings by just one stroke.
“I am really proud of the effort we showed this week,” head coach Dusty Smith said in an MSU release. “We knew after the practice round that we needed to be disciplined and patient out there. We did that this week. It was a complete team effort, and I couldn’t be happier for the guys.”
Ugo Malcor and Dain Richie led the team with scores of 5-under and 4-under, placing second and fourth respectively in the individual standings. Drew Wilson joined them in the Top 15 at one-under while Garrett Endicott finished even and Jackson Skinner finished 1-over.
“We were able to have great intentions for the week and a great playing focus,” Smith added. “Like I said earlier this week, this event was much more than just a tournament to us, and I’m happy we were able to come out on top.”
The Bulldogs will play co-hosts alongside Southern Miss and Ole Miss in their next outing at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational in Saucier on Oct. 18-20.
