STARKVILLE — Starkville Academy will be on the hunt for a new girls basketball coach as it was confirmed to The Dispatch on Friday that head coach Colleen Roberts is stepping down after three years at the helm of the program.
“Coaching basketball at Starkville Academy has been a great opportunity for me to grow personally and professionally,” Roberts said. “I am grateful to the administration at SA for allowing me to work with so many great kids and their families to help grow the basketball program and to see it improve. … I believe I am leaving the program better than I found it and wish them great success in the future.”
Roberts and the Volunteers went 16-12 this season, securing their only winning season of her tenure and the program’s first winning season since the 2016-17 campaign. Starkville Academy also reached the playoffs in two of Roberts’s three seasons as head coach.
“We’re certainly going to miss Coach Roberts,” Starkville Academy Athletic Director Greg Owen said. “Her time at Starkville Academy brought a lot of growth and success, and provided stability being here for as long as she was.”
The search for a new head coach is now underway, though the Vols aren’t looking to rush into anything immediately.
Starkville Academy’s only plan is to continue to build on the successful foundation that Roberts established by securing the program’s future.
“All candidates will be taken into account,” Owen said. “We’re pleasantly surprised with the amount of interest that this vacancy has garnered over just the past day.”
