PENSACOLA — Mississippi State soccer’s 14-game winning streak came to an end on Thursday.

South Carolina ended the Bulldogs’ unbeaten run with a comprehensive 3-0 win in the Southeastern Conference tournament semifinals.

The Bulldogs, now 17-2 on the season, finished 10-0 in regular season conference play to win their first SEC title. They began the conference tournament with a 2-1 overtime win against Tennessee on Tuesday before falling out of the tournament on Thursday.

The Gamecocks (10-2-7) avenged a 2-1 home loss to the Bulldogs in the final game of the regular season, with forward Catherine Barry pulling the strings in a strong second half display. Barry provided an assist for the first of two Brianna Behm goals before winning and converted a penalty in the 80th minute to seal the win.

To make matters worse, MSU forward Kara Harris left the field in an aircast after a gruesome injury in the final minutes of the match. The Bulldogs were already without Alivia Buxton and Ilana Izquierdo from injuries suffered at the end of the regular season, so the loss of Harris will be another blow to the Bulldogs’ depth.

The Bulldogs lacked the control of possession and midfield that has become expected of them after an unprecedented regular season run. Tired legs and injuries appeared to have caught up to them to some extent, and the rest and preparation ahead of the NCAA Tournament will be their first week without multiple fixtures and travel since September.

Head coach James Armstrong and his team will return to Starkville, where they will await the results of the NCAA Selection Show on Monday. The show will air live on the NCAA’s website at 3 p.m.
