STARKVILLE — It seems like Mississippi State is the javelin capital of the world, with four former or current Bulldog athletes winning their country’s respective javelin championships since March.
“I’m proud of them, first of all,” MSU associate head coach April Thomas said in Tuesday’s press release. “I know they represented their countries well, but also represent Mississippi State. Three of them were here at one time, and I’m happy they’re still doing it.”
Most recently, that included rising redshirt junior Franck Di Sanza, who won the Swiss title with a throw of 74.27 meters or 243 feet, eight inches, and also former Bulldog Nico Quijera, who won the Spanish title with a throw of 74.41 meters or 244 feet, one inch.
“They’re still throwing,” Thomas said. “They’re still healthy and at that level. Whenever they have success after they leave here, they make the program look good.”
That success includes championships won by former Bulldog Curtis Thompson, who won the US javelin title in June, and Anderson Peters, who won Grenada’s javelin title in March.
Peters is also the reigning world champion, and holds the Grenada record with a throw of 93.07 meters, currently the fifth-longest throw in world history.
“I’m hoping to see Anderson do something special,” Thomas said. “They’ve done it before here, and it would be nice to see them do it on that level and both make the podium. Hopefully, they can put it all together on that day at that time, and we’ll see some big throws.”
