BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference unveiled its eighth annual men’s basketball coaches preseason All-SEC first and second teams Wednesday.
Thirty-two players received votes for the teams, and the University of Alabama, the University of Florida, the University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt University led all schools with three selections each, while Mississippi State had two selections. Nine schools are represented on the preseason squads.
The coaches preseason All-SEC first and second teams have a minimum of eight players on each squad, voted on by the SEC head coaches. No ties were broken, and no predicted order of finish was made.
MSU senior guard Dee Bost and junior forward Renardo Sidney were named to the first and second teams, respectively.
Bost, a native of Concord, N.C., was named first-team All-SEC by the media two weeks ago.
“It’s an honor, and I’m excited,” said Sidney, who averaged 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds a year ago. “But there’s a lot of work to be done this year. It’s an honor you really want to receive at the end of the year.”
University of Mississippi junior forward Reginald Buckner was named to the second team.
Buckner, a native of Memphis, Tenn., enters his third season needing just 22 blocked shots to break Sean Murphy’s all-time school career record of 180. Last year, Buckner surpassed his single-season blocks record (64) with 95 as a sophomore and became the first Ole Miss player to be named to the SEC All-Defensive Team. He also tied Ansu Sesay’s school record for blocks in a game with eight at Arkansas. The 6-foot-9 post man averaged 6.8 points and team-best 6.4 rebounds per game last season.
Alabama senior JaMychal Green was selected to the eight-member first team, while junior Tony Mitchell and sophomore Trevor Releford were voted to the nine-member second team.
