A rose to the Mississippi State University Kinesiology Department for its efforts to bring one of the simple joys of childhood to those who might otherwise be overlooked. Beginning Monday and continuing through Friday at the Sanderson Center, MSU Kinesiology will hold its iCanBike Camp, where MSU students will help special needs children learn how to ride a bicycle. The daily camp lasts about three hours. This is the third iCanBike camp staged by the department. Special needs children are often excluded from many of the activities, but with extra care, time and attention, they can learn new skills. Bike-riding is a great form of exercise, but more than that, it’s a lot of fun. Ask any kid. We salute these MSU students and the Kinesiology Department for this wonderful act of service. A rose to Tony McGee, who was the unanimous choice of Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District Board of Trustees to serve as the district’s new superintendent of schools. The board made its decision Friday following a lengthy executive session to discuss the position. McGee, who is currently superintendent of Scott County School District, takes the reins in Starkville on July 1. McGee has 14 years of experience as a superintendent, also previously serving in that role at Kosciusko School District. He holds doctorate in educational leadership from Mississippi State University. McGee will take over for Eddie Peasant, who is leaving the district June 30 after five years. McGee was among the finalists in 2017 when Peasant was hired.
A rose to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, which has quite a winning streak in patient safety. For the 10th consecutive year, the hospital earned an “A” Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for its achievements in protecting patients from harm in the hospital for spring 2022, making the hospital one of only 22 in the United States to earn an “A” in every grading cycle since 2012. The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, grades hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures based on errors, injuries, accidents and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. We again congratulate our hospital on this important achievement.
