A rose to the Caledonia Cavaliers, who defeated Louisville, 27-7, Friday night and are now just two wins from what would have been considered an impossible dream when the season started: A Class 4A state championship. It’s already the most successful season in Caledonia’s 65-year football history. Caledonia has never won a playoff game in its history before this season. They haven’t lost one since. Up next, Caledonia will take on Senatobia in Caledonia with a trip to the championship game on the line. The Cavaliers aren’t likely to be favored, but what else is new? The Cavs are on a roll and we couldn’t be more proud. GO CAVS!
A rose to all those who donated turkeys for the various turkey drives this year. By Thursday, turkey drive organizers from the City of Columbus, the Community Benefits Committee and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s office said a little more than 600 turkeys had been donated. They hoped to reach their goal of 1,000 before yesterday’s distribution at the soccer complex. Thanks to the generosity of citizens, that goal was shattered. “I stopped counting at 1,200,” said Rhonda Sanders, of the Community Benefits Committee. “It was amazing. A lot of stores had a limit on turkeys of one per customer, but people were going in, buying a turkey, then going back and buying another. Everything went so smoothly, too. To think this could happen during a pandemic, well it’s just wonderful.” Great job and Happy Thanksgiving to organizers, volunteers and, most of all, those who donated.
A rose to Main Street Columbus for its choice of long-time Columbus restaurateur Helen Karriem as this year’s grand marshal of Columbus’ Bicentennial Christmas Parade, which rolls through downtown Dec. 5, beginning at 3 p.m. Karriem’s family has been a longtime fixture in Columbus. Her mother, Sallie Mae Jones, owned and operated Jones Restaurant in Catfish Alley for more than 60 years. Affectionately known as Ms. Helen, she opened Helen’s Kitchen & Catering in 1988 and from the beginning has always believed that family is the most important thing in life. We applaud Main Street and congratulate Ms. Helen for her selection as grand marshal.
