I was fascinated to read The Dispatch laying out the money trail in “Our View” this past Friday. Using MSMS as a bit of sleight of hand in fundraising, especially as locating MSMS on the MSU campus is bad for MSMS students by every metric, is a chillingly cold-blooded stunt. So much so that I think other motives lurk in the shadows (some motives motivate; others just lurk).
A popular conspiracy theory is that moving MSMS is just a way to clear an obstacle to closing MUW itself, much as changing the MUW name would be. Just as creating rival nursing programs at other universities may be. I cannot fit Elon Musk into this plot, though, so it is probably just fevered imagination.
Following the money is a better way to understand the issue. SOCSD does not get the money, except in passing. Contractors and administrators get the money. It might be instructive for the Dispatch to find out whether the end-recipients of all those millions play golf with our legislators.
