Open letter to the Governor
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you on behalf of concerned constituents regarding an imminent risk to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries in Mississippi.
Recent data and projections indicate that a significant number of Mississippians—potentially up to 400,000 individuals—may experience disruptions in their SNAP benefits. Of particular concern, 58% of SNAP recipients are children and elderly individuals who are most vulnerable to food insecurity. Additionally, 38% of recipients live in households with at least one working member, underscoring that many families are already contributing through work while facing ongoing economic challenges.
Given the potential for widespread hardship among families, seniors, and children, we respectfully request your consideration of:
■ Declaring a state of emergency to mobilize resources and coordinate relief efforts for SNAP beneficiaries or
■ Calling a special session of the Mississippi Legislature to urgently address SNAP-related funding, administrative processes, and any policy adjustments needed to prevent benefits interruptions.
The primary objective of any such action would be to ensure continued access to nutritious food for the most vulnerable Mississippians and to provide clear, timely information and support to families navigating the SNAP system during this period of potential disruption. All options must be explored.
We recognize the many demands on your office and the state budget. However, ensuring that no Mississippian faces hunger due to gaps in SNAP delivery is a critical public health and humanitarian priority. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter and for your continued leadership on the well-being of Mississippi’s families. I am available at your convenience should you wish to discuss this further.
