As we approached downtown Columbus, the sounds of crowds cheering grew ever louder. We knew that today was definitely a special day; a day always to remember. And we were ready to be part of the cheering crowds who we knew would be lining the streets, shouting, cheering and greeting their friends and neighbors, filled with the joyful spirit of the day. The anticipation was enormous because we knew that THIS day was the start of something so important and special that it would impact literally everyone.
Then, we saw it at last! Hundreds, yes even THOUSANDS of jubilant people of every size, description, color and dress, jumping for joy, waving a green sea of glorious palm fronds in a cacophony of mid-air celebratory motion! There was shouting and clapping and echoing, “He is coming! The King is coming! Make way for King Jesus!” “Hosanna to the King!” “Hosanna, Hosanna!” What a glorious moment to witness the population of ever so thankful Christians remembering to celebrate the beginning of Holy Week on this Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday: the day that Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem to culminate His earthly life’s work of salvation for mankind.
But wait! No, it can’t be! Where was the joyous throng making all that commotion that we had heard from blocks away? There were no palm branches, no praising and thanking God for coming to save us as our eternal King! That raucous sound, that joyous choir of many voices was coming from…the soccer complex! Oh, yes, coming into view was the enormous sports complex in downtown Columbus. It was jammed with hundreds and hundreds of citizens singing praises to the gods of soccer!
On Palm Sunday it really was a sight to behold.
