The National Day of Prayer will be observed in Columbus on the lawn of the Lowndes County Courthouse on Thursday, May 1, 12:00-12:45 pm. The program will include praise music, prayers lead by local clergy and lay leaders, and guest speaker Scott Reall, author, and executive director of Restore Ministries. Seating will be available. Second Avenue in front of the Courthouse will be closed but vehicles may enter to discharge passengers. In case of rain, the event will move to the downtown YMCA gymnasium.
Historically, prayer has been a vital part of America’s history. Our leaders have called for prayer for our nation many times, and in 1952 a joint resolution of Congress declared there would be an annual day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended, permanently setting the first Thursday of every May as an official National Day of Prayer.
We are blessed to have a government that recognizes the importance of prayer and grants the freedom of public prayer. It is a blessing not to be taken lightly. This is the fourteenth year that the local observance is being sponsored by the Christian Community in Prayer Committee, a group of lay people and clergy from various denominations in this area. We encourage all area residents to meet at the Courthouse on May 1st as we, along with others across our nation, join in prayer.
