I am writing in response to Mr. George Sill’s Jan. 25 letter to the editor about the Oktibbeha County Lake Dam issue.
I do not know your motive for writing but my intuition suggests you may not live in the perceived affected areas nor were you in the areas the day of the suggested evacuation. I was there and very scared. It rained for several days and was still raining. It was really bad. Water was everywhere. There is a natural gully at the end of my place. The water raged and roared with a loud gushing sound and with swift currents all night.
The next day, on my way out of the area, all routes out had dilemmas and hazards. I was praying as I was driving. I hope no trees or limbs would fall onto my vehicle. Water was gushing out of the wooded areas. There was water almost to the road. The wildlife area was flooding. The entire place was surrounded by water. Flood water can be a killer. The amount of water in the lake was more than what I wanted to think about.
Some of us that were evaculating that day were some of the same people who evacuated the same lake area in the 1960s. No police came, no road supervisors came nor any emergency vehicle came. But grace and mercy were there with us. These memories are not pleasant, but I am grateful to God all of us survived that day.
If 90 percent of the core is in good shape, then what about the 10 percent that is not in good shape? Sometimes a centimeter size defect can become your worst nightmare. I learned in life sometimes the small stuff may give you the most trouble.
I give many thanks and my highest praise to Marvell Howard, his teams and police officers. You all showed that you cared about the well-being and safety of the persons in the affected areas.
I detest scare tactics. I saw reassurance and others looking out for the wellbeing and safety of others.
In the event of the possibility of severe threats of disaster that may expose people to danger, people are evacuated. If the disaster did not happen, it does not mean time, effort and money were wasted. It means God’s mercy.
Judas could not see the great thing Mary did when she anointed Jesus with the expensive oil. All Judas could see was the waste of money. This put Judas on the path to betray Jesus. Judas was in the charge of the monty bag. Money seemed to blind Judas of the love of Jesus.
