In Saturday’s performance by the Starkville-MSU Symphony Orchestra, I heard Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.” Lincoln’s speeches as his nation was being rent by civil war were read in part, and I fought against weeping. I recalled the speeches of Winston Churchill as his nation was being brutally bombed by Germany, and it was difficult not to weep. Then I read the speeches delivered by Donald Trump as his nation was being “invaded” by a Venezuelan gang (really? A gang?) and I struggled not to laugh out loud.
