I have written about the danger of military coups from maintaining a standing army. The declared intention by Donald Trump of using military force against “blue state” governments drags us so close to the realization of that risk that I see no realistic way to avoid it. President Trump has fired 20% of “his” generals, mostly those he sees as too brown, or insufficiently loyal to him. I think it is incredibly naive of him to believe, with the command instability he has created, that he will remain in command of a military force he has already unleashed on his own citizens. James Madison wrote, “The means of defense against foreign danger have always been the instrument of tyranny at home.”
