Recently I read a couple of letters published in your newspaper referring to the conflict between India and Pakistan, and mediation by President Trump. Did President Trump and/or his administration have anything to do with stopping this conflict? “Absolutely not,” because involving a 3rd country in resolving the conflict with Pakistan would be suicidal for any political party who is in power in India. It was a unilateral plea from Pakistan, not a trilateral dialogue that prompted calls to de-escalate. As for President Trump, he is known for prematurely declaring “victories” and taking undue credit regardless of actual outcomes. This situation is no exception. The conflict between India and Pakistan stems from two major issues: terrorism and Kashmir. However, the most recent escalation, referred to as “Operation Sindoor” by the Indian military, was entirely focused on terrorism and not related to the Kashmir territorial dispute. According to Indian Prime Minister Modi, this operation is still ongoing and will remain active as long as terrorism continues to threaten India.
To provide context, cross-border terrorism has plagued India since Pakistan’s creation in 1947. The cause of the current operation was a horrific attack on April 22, in which three gunmen from Pakistan brutally killed 26 civilian men who were vacationing with their families on the Indian side of Kashmir simply after asking their religion.
This kind of targeted violence underscores the urgent need for global recognition of terrorism and its total eradication regardless of geography and faith.
