I want to commend the Columbus City Council for making the wise and responsible decision to end its contract with Worth Thomas Consultants. This firm, which has represented the city at the state and federal levels since 2022, has consistently misrepresented its involvement in legislation on behalf of Columbus. The council’s action not only ends an unproductive relationship but also frees up $72,000 annually, funds that can now be redirected toward projects that will directly benefit our citizens.
As a state legislator, I can say with confidence that the Golden Triangle is well represented in Jackson. We are fortunate to have dedicated senators and representatives who work together across districts for the betterment of our entire region. Whether the issue is infrastructure, education, or community development, your legislative delegation stands ready to advocate for the needs of Columbus and Lowndes County.
The only time a city truly needs a lobbying firm is when there is a unique or highly specialized need, such as advancing economic development legislation, securing funds for a specific project, or pursuing something as targeted as expanding gaming on the waterway. In those cases, a lobbyist can complement, not replace, the work of local legislators. Unfortunately, this firm failed to build that kind of partnership with the area delegation or to deliver meaningful results for Columbus.
By choosing to move forward without Worth Thomas Consultants, the city council has reaffirmed its trust in the people who were elected to represent Columbus at the Capitol. I applaud Councilman Jason Spears, Lavonne Harris, Gary Jefferson and Rusty Green for leading the charge and for acting decisively.
In the future, if any city or public entity considers hiring a lobbying firm, I strongly encourage them to first consult with their legislative delegation. Out of more than three million people in Mississippi, there are only 174 legislators, each with a voice and a vote to make our state better. Columbus already has two senators and seven representatives who stand ready to work in unison to move our community forward.
Again, I commend the council for this thoughtful and fiscally responsible decision. Together, we can continue to ensure that the voice of Columbus is heard loud and clear in Jackson without unnecessary intermediaries.
