A Columbus woman was arrested Wednesday after allegedly leading Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a chase in a stolen vehicle that ended on Highway 45 South.
Mary Lee Jones, 42, is charged with possession of stolen property, felony fleeing or eluding in a motor vehicle and multiple traffic violations, a Thursday LCSO press release said.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch in a text message that the pursuit started on Highway 82. Deputies were attempting to stop a white mustang for a switched tag in what should have been a routine traffic stop, when Jones refused to pull over, the release said.
Jones then led deputies on a pursuit that lasted about 15 minutes, Hawkins said, and covered several miles throughout the county, causing some property damage. The pursuit ended on Highway 45 South, where Jones was arrested, the release said.
Once Jones was in custody, deputies determined that the vehicle Jones had been driving was reported stolen in the city of Columbus.
Jones was taken to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. Bond had not been set Thursday morning, as Jones was awaiting her initial court appearance.
