A Starkville woman is in jail after reportedly stabbing her husband in the arm while he slept.
Starkville police arrested 26-year-old Teyana Savage on suspicion of aggravated domestic assault after responding to a reported stabbing at an apartment complex on Catherine Street.
Savage made her initial appearance in Starkville Municipal Court on Thursday afternoon, during which Starkville Police Department Det. John Lay said the suspect’s husband, Terrance Savage, claimed his wife had gone to a neighbor’s house for drinks before returning to the home and stabbing him. Terrance reported to police he was in bed with the couple’s 4-month-old child at the time of the incident, Lay said.
If convicted, Teyana could face two to 20 years in prison.
Teyana said Terrance had lived with her for about three months, after the birth of their most recent child. The couple, who have been married for eight years, has seven children, but Lay said only the youngest child lives with them.
However, during the appearance, Teyana claimed that Terrance wasn’t supposed to be in the apartment and that an officer who responded to an incident at the home a few days earlier had instructed him to leave.
The Savages have a long history of domestic violence charges between them, including a third-degree arson charge in 2015 after Teyana allegedly attempted to set Terrance’s car on fire. That charge has been retired, according to Oktibbeha County Circuit Court records.
She also was accused of misdemeanor domestic violence in Jackson in July 2017, when she allegedly stabbed Terrance in the back.
Terrance has also had several charges, including a 2010 statutory rape charge that was remanded from Oktibbeha County Circuit Court to a lower court; a 2015 aggravated assault charge that was later dropped; a 2015 kidnapping charge that was no-billed by a grand jury and a 2016 cocaine charge for which he received a suspended jail sentence.
Municipal Court Judge Rodney Faver set Teyana’s bond at $10,000.
