WEST POINT — A West Point woman has won $1 million at the NASCAR Powerball Playoff Championship.
Stephanie Walker was one of four finalists who won a VIP trip for two to NASCAR Championship Weekend, held Friday through Sunday, at Phoenix Raceway in Arizona. Those four were eligible for a $1 million grand prize, which Walker won.
“It’s a blessing,” Walker said Monday morning. “I don’t have too much else to say about it right now.”
Walker told The Dispatch last week she works as a truck driver for Starkville Sanitation Department and a bus driver for Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District. She said she had never had the chance to fly or visit someplace as far away as Phoenix.
She said if she won the $1 million she would pay off debts, repair her family home and establish a scholarship fund for her children, Chakyra and Devon Jones Jr.
Walker was entered into the competition because she was a Mississippi Lottery Corporation Insider. She became one of 16 semifinalists in July who were involved in the partnership competition between NASCAR, Powerball and 24 participating lotteries nationwide.
The semifinalists went head-to-head in a series of drawings that coincided with the elimination rounds of NASCAR’s playoffs. Last week she became one of the four finalists.
As a finalist, Walker won a free flight to Phoenix, three nights in a hotel, VIP access to the race and rides in a pace car.
The drawing was held during the pre-race coverage.
