WEST POINT — West Point Mayor Scott Ross has taken an indefinite leave of absence from his duties.
Ross has not resigned and will resume the duties of his office upon conclusion of his leave, Ward 4 Selectman and Vice-Mayor Keith McBrayer said in a statement. McBrayer will serve as interim mayor until Ross returns. City government will function “as normal” while Ross is absent, McBrayer said.
West Point City Clerk Lela Jack said nobody at City Hall knows how long Ross will be absent. She last saw him at City Hall Tuesday, she said. It is unclear if Ross will be paid while on leave.
“We don”t know no details,” Jack said.
Neither Ross nor McBrayer could be reached for comment this morning.
Ross is in his second term as mayor of West Point and often has been at odds with members of the Board of Selectmen. Most recently, on Oct. 12, Ross refused to recognize a motion by Ward 3 Selectman Charles D. Collins to advertise for three new officers in the West Point Police Department. Ross cited the lack of funds in the city budget to pay for the new positions, cars and benefits, but eventually changed his position after heated discussion and allowed the motion to pass.
Ross also recently has been at odds with selectmen over what he felt was the illegal firing of Electric Department Superintendent Shasta Plunkett and other issues.
