Businessman and volunteer firefighter Steve Pyle is challenging Harry Sanders in the race for District 1 county supervisor.
Pyle, who is running as an independent, co-owns Golden Glow Tanning Salon in both Columbus and Starkville and works as a sales consultant at ADS Security in Columbus. He has also volunteered as a firefighter in fire districts 1 and 3 for more than 20 years.
“I want to be a supervisor that residents and business owners could call on any time and know that I would support their concerns,” Pyle wrote in a statement sent to The Dispatch. “I want all residents to know their opinion matters and will not go unheard.”
Pyle added that he would use his experience as a business owner and a volunteer firefighter to inform his decisions as a supervisor.
“I know I can serve District 1 to make it a (better place to) have a business, live, or raise a family,” he wrote.
Sanders, a Republican, declined to comment. He is currently serving his fifth term as District 1 supervisor and his fourth term as Board of Supervisors president. He has never run unopposed.
Qualifying deadline is Friday, with party primaries following in August.
If no other candidate qualifies in the District 1 race, Sanders and Pyle will face off in the November general election.
