Two suspects are in custody after a Monday night shooting left a 3-year-old boy injured.
Demarco Brewer, 24, and Shemar Glaspie, 25, are each charged with one felony count of child neglect, Police Chief Joseph Daughtry said at a Monday press conference.
At about 8:55 p.m., officers responded to a call at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle regarding a child who had suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Daughtry said earlier that night, Brewer was with the child’s mother, his girlfriend, the 3-year-old and Glaspie at a home on the 400 block of 15th Street North.
At some point that night, Daughtry said the mother left briefly to go to a nearby store, leaving the child with the two men. When she returned, the child had suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach.
When asked, Daughtry did not know if the wound appeared to have been self-inflicted or caused by another shooter.
“This investigation has taken a lot of weird turns because we’re trying to get to the bottom of what really happened with this child,” Daughtry said.
The child was taken in a personal vehicle to the hospital before being airlifted to a secondary hospital for additional treatment due to the severity of the injury.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Daughtry did not know the condition of the child.
Brewer, who was at the hospital with the child, gave inconsistent answers regarding his involvement with the shooting when questioned by police, Daughtry said, leading to his arrest at the hospital.
Glaspie turned himself in to police in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
As for how the child was shot, Daughtry said investigators are still collecting evidence and are continuing to question the two suspects. Additional charges against Brewer and Glaspie are possible as the investigation continues, he said.
“We have so many different variations to the story from the two people that were there, and we’re trying to get to the bottom of what transpired,” Daughtry said. “We do know that they were there. We do know that they were in guardianship of the child, and that’s why they’re being charged right now.”
Daughtry said both Brewer and Glaspie are being held at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center with their bonds set at $100,000.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information in this case is asked to call Columbus Police Department at (662) 244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
