Columbus police charged two men Thursday night with the murder of a 35-year-old College Street resident earlier this week. Police are still looking for a third suspect and possibly others.
Derrick Bankhead, 33, of 901 11th St. S., Apt. T-5 — turned himself in to police Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and was charged with the murder of his 35-year-old first cousin, Eddie Terrell Bankhead, who was fatally shot Monday at his 2018 1/2 College St. home.
Just a few hours later, police also arrested and charged 28-year-old Omar Beard at his 815 13th St. N., Apt. C-4, home.
Police are looking for a third murder suspect, Cortez Williams, of 515 18th St. N. Williams was described by police as black, 6-foot-1-inches tall, 200 pounds, and sporting an Afro and a beard.
“There may be the possibility of other arrests — a strong possibility,” said Lt. Selvain McQueen, commander of the Criminal Investigations Division.
McQueen said attempted robbery appeared to be the motive when masked men entered the home of Bankhead at 11:36 p.m. Monday night. When officers arrived, they found Bankhead in the passenger seat of a car outside his home at 2018 1/2 College St. He had been shot once in the upper body.
Bankhead was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, where he died during surgery. He was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m.
Anyone with information about Williams or other suspects should call the Public Information Officer Terrie Songer at 662-364-1540 or Golden Triangle Crimestoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
