STARKVILLE — A toddler who shot himself Sunday with an unsecured firearm has died from his injuries.
Armani Turnipseed, 2, passed away at about 8 p.m. Monday at Blair Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed Tuesday.
Turnipseed’s death stems from a Sunday incident at a residence on the 1400 block of Louisville Street where he gained access to Nigel Cheatham’s unsecured firearm from a drawer and shot himself, SPD Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady told The Dispatch Monday.
Cheatham, 24, was arrested Monday morning and charged with felony child deprivation of necessities with substantial harm.
Hunt said the death appears to be accidental, but he has ordered an autopsy.
Lovelady said Cheatham’s charges had not been upgraded as of early Tuesday afternoon.
