Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers hopes Santa isn’t the only one keeping an eye on who’s naughty or nice this holiday season.
According to Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott, who is also president for the regional tips hotline, Crime Stoppers rewards for burglaries and robberies will be doubled until the end of January. Typically tips that lead to an arrest and conviction pay up to $1,000.
Scott told The Dispatch Wednesday afternoon there is always an uptick in those crimes around the holidays, especially after Christmas.
“If I’m a crook and I’m driving by your house and I see all those empty boxes out on the street from new TVs and new computers, you bet I’m remembering that and coming back to visit,” Scott said.
Scott said he hopes the bump in crime will be matched by a bump in tips.
Those with tips can call Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151 or use the P3 smartphone app, Scott said. Tips that result in an arrest are eligible for a cash reward.
“We’re really promoting the app because a lot of people would rather text than call, anyway,” Scott said. “The app allows people to send pictures and videos and stuff like that, and we can still interact with them and it all stays anonymous.”
