Continuing the journey to a more active community, the YMCA and the Dispatch again have partnered to offer the Possum Town Mile-a-Day Marathon this month. The goal is for participants to log 26.2 miles of walking or running, throughout the month. The event is a non-competitive effort to promote healthier lifestyles for Lowndes County residents.

Family, friends and neighbors are invited to the Columbus Riverwalk to register at 2 p.m. Sunday. At the kick-off, participants will receive a log-in sheet for tracking their daily mileage and information on Lowndes County walking/running trails.

Registration also will be held at any of the Lowndes County YMCA branches, until June 2, for those unable to attend the June 3 Riverwalk registration event. A $10.00 entry fee will help defray the costs of the program. Participants will receive an event T-shirt.

“This is an opportunity to bring the community together,” said YMCA Director Andy Boyd. “It’s important for Lowndes County residents to get up and get moving. A mile a day can make a big difference in your health. It’s about incorporating exercise into your daily routine.”

“We hope this event will introduce residents to the pleasures of getting out in nature and walking, as spring unfolds,” said Dispatch Publisher Birney Imes, who is an avid walker. “We’re delighted to be part of an event that develops community, while at the same time promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
