CALEDONIA — Five teenagers suffered moderate injuries in a single-vehicle accident on Cal Steens Road, Thursday.
According to a Lowndes County Sheriff”s Office report, Carroll Lancaster, 17, of Caledonia, was driving his 2006 Ford F150 south on Cal Steens Road when he entered a curve and ran off the road into gravel. He tried to correct the vehicle but went into a skid before striking a tree head-on.
“It hit so hard, it looked like it snapped the tree 6 to 8 feet up,” said LCSO Chief Deputy Greg Wright.
LCSO officers got to the accident site within four minutes of being dispatched at 10:05 p.m.
Lancaster and one other passenger were wearing a seat belt, according to the report. Three others weren”t, but the report does not specify if seat belts had been removed after the accident and before emergency responders arrived.
“Not citations were issued,” Wright said.
Lancaster and passengers Steven C. Wallace Jr., 17, of Caledonia; Darby S. Williams, 16, of Caledonia; Courtney L. McAlexander, 16, of Columbus; and Andrew A. Hankins, 16, of Columbus were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. All five were released from Baptist on Friday, though at least one is still being treated in Birmingham, Ala.
