A Columbus man is in custody after a short standoff Thursday outside a Plymouth Road home.
Michael Taylor is facing a charge of domestic violence after authorities with the Columbus Police Department were sent to the home at about 1:45 p.m. on a disturbance call.
The caller — Taylor’s wife — told dispatchers her husband “was intoxicated and walking around with a gun,” according to a media release from Tony McCoy, assistant chief of police with CPD.
The wife made the call from a neighbor’s home and claimed Taylor had consumed “drugs and drank alcohol,” McCoy said.
The Columbus SWAT team, after arriving at the scene, contacted Taylor on the home’s back porch. He was taken into custody without incident, McCoy said.
CPD would not release any more information regarding the incident.
New Hope High temporarily locked-down
In a separate incident, New Hope High School was forced to go into a brief lock-down period Thursday afternoon.
At about 4:30 p.m., deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff Department received reports of an armed woman within a mile of the New Hope campus. To be safe, New Hope called its practicing football team and marching band indoors and locked-down the building, principal Matt Smith told The Dispatch this morning. There was also a volleyball game going on at the time.
“As a precaution, we shut down temporarily,” Smith said.
Officials with LCSD said the woman had been involved in a domestic dispute with her son and that the school was under no threat. The woman was detained, but county authorities would not release her name or pending charges this morning.
