The Columbus Police Department attempted to arrest a repeat offender Tuesday on the Southside but had to settle for his brother.
Officers arrested Sugi Fox, 29, of 1801 Third Ave. S., for interfering with police duties, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after he assisted his brother, Lavento Fox, of 1624 Fourth St. S., whom officers were attempting to arrest.
Around 3 p.m., officers spotted Lavento and Sugi Fox exiting a vehicle on Sixth Avenue South near 16th Street and attempted to arrest Lavento on an outstanding warrant for contempt of court. When the officers ordered Lavento to place his hands on the police car, both brothers began aggressively walking and yelling toward the officers. When Lavento Fox refused orders to place his hands behind his back, one officer deployed his Taser, striking Lavento.
Sugi Fox moved to assist his brother, who was disabled due to the Taser, and pulled out the Taser probes. Lavento Fox then fled the scene with officers chasing him on foot.
The officers ran through Southside, jumping fences as they gave chase, but were unable to apprehend Fox.
Returning to the scene of the Tasing, officers attempted to place Sugi Fox under arrest for interfering, but he refused to put his hands behind his back. Three officers were needed to subdue him.
Sugi Fox then began to yell profanities at the officers before he was placed in the patrol car and escorted to the Lowndes County Detention Center.
Both Fox brothers have extensive arrest records. Lavento Fox has been arrested for burglary of an occupied dwelling, possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of cocaine. Sugi Fox has been arrested for murder, several assault charges, with and without a weapon, shooting into a dwelling and carrying a concealed weapon.
A grand jury decided there was insufficient evidence to try Sugi Fox on the murder and shooting into a dwelling charges.
