A man is behind bars after allegedly hitting another vehicle Tuesday at the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam and fleeing from police.
Emmett Calmes, 43, is charged with felony eluding, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and violating his parole.
Shortly before midnight, officers responded Tuesday to a 911 call about a two-vehicle accident at the lock and dam, Columbus Police Department Cpl. Nicholas Hairston wrote in a text to The Dispatch.
Calmes allegedly backed into another car, and as the other driver called 911, he started to leave the scene of the accident. The driver of the other car was not injured, Hairston said.
As officers arrived on scene at the lock and dam, Calmes allegedly sped off down Highway 45, and the officers gave chase. The chase continued until Calmes allegedly crashed his car near Golden Triangle Regional Airport, exited his vehicle and attempted to flee into the woods, Hairston said.
Officers arrested Calmes before taking him to Lowndes County Adult Detention Center for booking. Hairston said Calmes’ bond was set at $10,000.
