Two Columbus men are behind bars for their alleged involvement in a Tuesday shooting that led to one suspect attempting to ditch a gun inside a Hardee’s bathroom toilet.
Javarion Davis, 21, is charged with felony possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and Cortney Petty, 18, is charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, Columbus Police Department Public Information Officer Bryan Moore told The Dispatch.
Officers responded at about 6:48 p.m. to reports of “a large disturbance” at the 200 block of North McCrary Road involving a large crowd with members in possession of firearms.
Moore said officers activated their sirens and lights to disperse the crowd, but soon after, they heard gunshots in the area of a nearby storage unit facility. No injuries or property damage were reported in the shooting, he said.
Officers received a description of the shooting suspect from a 911 dispatcher that matched Davis, who was seen walking into the restroom at Hardee’s on Alabama Street.
“When the officer went inside, the officer went in the restroom and heard the back of the toilet closing,” Moore said. “So the officer ordered him outside, got him in custody (and then the) officer went back in, looked in the toilet (and) there was a gun in the toilet.”
Davis was arrested, along with Petty, who was also at the restaurant.
Both men are being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center awaiting their initial appearance in court.
The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests and charges are possible, Moore said.
