WEST POINT — A 54-year-old Starkville woman died Sunday morning in an accident at U.S. Highway 45 Alternate and Old West Point Road in Clay County.
The accident took place just before 5:30 a.m., when a red 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 23-year-old Anna Nelson of Baldwyn was traveling southbound on Highway 45 Alternate, said Brian Mobley, public affairs officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
A 1992 Dodge pickup truck driven by 72-year-old M.J. Williams of Starkville was attempting to cross Highway 45 Alternate on Old West Point Road and was hit on the driver”s side by Nelson in the Grand Cherokee.
Williams and his passenger, 54-year-old Olivia Williams, both were ejected from their vehicle, Mobley said.
“Neither of them were wearing seat belts,” he said.
After the Williamses were ejected, Olivia Williams was struck by another vehicle heading south on Highway 45 Alternate, Mobley said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nelson was wearing a seat belt and was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle; she was discharged Monday.
M.J. Williams also was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital, then was flown to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo; he was discharged Tuesday.
