The Starkville Police Department has arrested two people and charged them with making a false police report after the pair claimed they were robbed this weekend in the Cotton District, then admitted to making up the story.
Officers from the Starkville Police Department were dispatched Sunday to the Oktibbeha County Hospital to investigate a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, officers talked to Michelle Lynn Stein, 19, of 505 Mary Lee Lane, and Charles William Maris III, 22, of 617 University Drive, Apartment B2, who claimed they had been robbed, according to a SPD release.
Maris and Stein told police they had been walking along Maxwell Street when they were approached by a black male in his mid to late 20s, who brandished a knife and demanded their belongings. The officers investigating the incident detected inconsistencies in the victims” statements and referred the matter to the SPD”s Investigations Division, according to the SPD.
After further investigation, both victims confessed to investigators the reports they had filed were false and completely fabricated.
Stein and Maris were arrested and charged with false reporting of a crime. Bond for each was set at $500.
