Drivers in Mississippi have a chance to help out local Main Street chapters by doing what they do every year, buying a car tag.
Mississippi Main Street Association announced a specialty “Historic Hometowns” plate recently.
The plate features a sunrise backlighting multiple landmarks from across the state.
Proceeds from the sale of the tag will be used by MMSA to, “Promote Main Street communities throughout Mississippi,” according to the organization’s website.
One such chapter is Columbus, which is one of the earliest established Main Street communities in the state. It kicked off on Aug. 9, 1985, and is responsible for multiple events throughout the year such as the Market Street Festival, the Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market, the Christmas Tree lighting and the Sounds of Summer Concert Series, which kicked off Thursday.

“What a unique way to promote our beautiful downtowns while you are on the go,” said Barbara Bigelow, Main Street Columbus executive director. “We are grateful to Mississippi Main Street Association for their creative idea and appreciate the continued support of our state legislature. I am ordering mine today and I hope you will, too!”
Once 300 plates are sold, the tags will go into production. Applicants will receive a letter informing them that the plates can be picked up at their local courthouse.
To apply for the plate, visit a local Main Street office or fill out the form on the MMSA website and mail it along with a check for $33 to Mississippi Main Street Association, P.O. Box 55747, Jackson, MS 39296.
