The cicadas are in full-throated chorus. Water sprinklers whisper a lazy tch-tch-tch. The evening air is filled with the laughter of children riding their bicycles and playing stick ball in the streets. And if you listen closely tonight, you will hear the haunting notes of the blues.
Yes, the sounds of summer have arrived, bringing with them the third annual concert series by the same name.
Every Thursday night, beginning tonight and extending through July 28, a free concert will be held at the Columbus Riverwalk. Music begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m.
The Sounds of Summer concert series, sponsored by Main Street Columbus and the Columbus Lowndes Development Link, kicks off with Starkville-based blues band Big Jim & the Hot Shots. The group, comprised of Jamie Lott, Sam Williams, Drew Dieckman, and “the Boogie Daddy,” plays old blues favorites as well as contemporary blues.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No coolers or pets will be allowed in the park. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.
The full Sounds of Summer lineup is as follows: June 9, Juke Joint Gypsies; June 16, Nash Creek; June 23, Star & Micey; June 30, Southbound Train; July 7, Cold 20; July 14, Swing Shift; July 21, Deacon Jones and The Late Night; and July 28, Hookin” Stan.
