On Monday and in the early hours of Tuesday, Monroe County deputies and agents with the North Mississippi Narcotics Unit were rounding up suspected drug dealers in Monroe County.
The roundup is the result of several months of investigation by Monroe County Narcotics investigators. Most of these dealers are considered street-level dealers, which means they are the ones that teenagers or adults could go to and buy drugs at any given time.
These arrests are significant in helping to limit access of illegal narcotics to teenagers and adults.
A drug investigation over several months is time consuming and expensive to operate.
Under the new House Bill 733 that was signed into law July 1, by the governor, the state will start seeking reimbursement by the drug dealers to pay for the narcotics investigations.
House Bill 733 states an assessment can be made “against convicted criminal defendants to cover the reasonable costs of investigations.” This new bill is good for law enforcement.
