WEST POINT — West Point”s incumbent mayor, Democrat Scott Ross, Tuesday defeated independent candidate Harold Lathon.
Not including absentee and affidavit ballots, Ross received 1,673 votes, and Lathon received 626 votes.
“I”m going to get a good night”s sleep,” Ross said after the election results were totaled Tuesday night. “It”s been a long campaign. I”m glad it”s over and very gratified by the results.
“Given the fact this is the third election in a short period of time, I”m very pleased with the turnout,” he added. “We worked just as hard during the general (election), as during the primary (election). I don”t ever take anything for granted.”
The voter turnout for the election — about 38 percent — was “good,” said West Point Chief Administrative Officer Randy Jones, noting the average turnout for general elections has been 30 to 40 percent of registered voters.
In Tuesday”s election, 2,318 of the city”s 7,200 registered voters cast ballots, 386 cast absentee ballots and about four cast affidavit ballots, said Jones.
