Two incumbent selectmen fall in primaries
Two West Point incumbent selectmen failed in their re-election bids in Tuesday’s Democratic primaries.
In Ward 3, challenger Ken Poole triumphed over incumbent Jimmy Clark. Poole received 377 votes, or 52 percent, to Clark’s 346, or 47.7 percent.
Challenger J. “Peicy” Pittman bested incumbent Gary Dedeaux in Ward 5 by a 441-317 margin, according to unofficial tallies. The third-place candidate in that race, LaTrenda Fenton, garnered 46 votes.
The Ward 1 selectman race appears to be set for a runoff between incumbent Linda Hannah and challenger Leta L. Turner.
Hannah received 275 votes, or 48.4 percent, in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, while Turner received 161, or 28.3 percent. The third-place candidate, Jimmy Davidson received 132.
Hannah and Turner will meet again on May 16.
Affidavit ballots have yet to be counted, and the city clerk’s office did not confirm by press time how many affidavits there are to process.
Ward 2 and Ward 4 selectmen William Binder and Keith McBrayer won their respective re-elections. Both candidates ran unopposed.
No Republicans ran for selectman.
