Vehicles heading east into Columbus were delayed Tuesday as work was underway to repave portions of Highway 82.
Mississippi Department of Transportation Northern District Engineer Matt Dunn told The Dispatch the $19.8 project was awarded to Falcon Contracting and began in late September.
Work will include repaving up to seven miles on Highway 82 East and West between Highway 45 South and one mile east of Military Road, lengthening several ramps onto the highway and adding new signage.
The project is expected to conclude in summer 2024.
As for commuters into Columbus, Dunn said workers will close off one road lane while work continues.
“MDOT asks motorists to slow down, watch for workers and pay attention to the signs,” Dunn said.
MDOT Northern District Commissioner John Caldwell said he was glad to see work begin and hopes it will continue at a steady pace.
“It’s always good to see construction projects going,” Caldwell said. “It seems to never be enough, but we never stop working on our roads.”
