A Columbus High School student was arrested Wednesday night during the school’s homecoming parade after police found a gun in his vehicle.
Javeon Colebrook, 18, is charged with felony possession of a weapon on a school campus and reckless driving, according to a press release from the Columbus Police Department.
Police were already assisting school resource officers at the event when, at about 7:30 p.m., Colebrook recklessly drove through the parking lot, nearly striking an officer. Police stopped the vehicle and noticed a firearm inside.
No injuries were reported during the incident, Public Information Officer Bryan Moore said in a text to The Dispatch. Colebrook is being held at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center awaiting his initial court appearance.
In the press release, Chief Joseph Daughtry said officers will be present at the remaining homecoming events this week to ensure citizens are safe.
