POPLARVILLE – Pearl River County Supervisor Hudson Holliday will formally kick off his campaign for the Republican nomination for governor on Thursday with a rally at the courthouse in Poplarville.
Holliday filed his qualifying papers last week for the Aug. 2 GOP primary. Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, Gulf Coast businessman Dave Dennis and state employee James Broadwater of Byram also are on the ballot.
“This election should be about who has the best vision, leadership and plans for moving Mississippi forward and off the bottom rather than who has the most money. I intend to conduct, and have been conducting, a grass-roots campaign,” Holliday said in a statement.
The candidate filing deadline is March 1. The general election is Nov. 8.
On the Democratic side Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and Clarksdale attorney and businessman Bill Luckett have filed.
Holliday was elected to the board of supervisors in 2007. He is a Poplarville businessman. He is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and served in the National Guard.
The voters “are hungry for a new face, new ideas and real leadership and not just more of the same. While it does take money to get a message to all the voters, the grass-roots strategy will cost a lot less than the conventional campaigns I expect my opponents to wage,” Holliday said.
