NOXUBEE COUNTY – A woman was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in Noxubee County Circuit Court.
Ciara Latham, 32, admitted to fatally shooting Breanna Franklin, 23, in July 2024, Assistant District Attorney Marc Amos said in a press release. Circuit Judge Lee Howard delivered Latham’s sentencing without eligibility for parole.
Latham was indicted for murder and aggravated assault in March 2025.
At about 2 a.m. July 6, 2024, Latham followed Franklin and Travis Green, Latham’s ex-boyfriend, to a parking lot near the Mississippi Department of Human Services building on Pearl Street in Macon and shot Franklin in the head through the passenger side window of Green’s car, the press release said.
After arriving on scene, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation found a spent shell casing and determined Latham was the prime suspect.
Later that morning, after receiving information from MBI, Columbus police officers secured a residence on Sydney Loop where Latham was staying as MBI executed a search warrant.
The firearm used in the murder was found in Latham’s room by MBI, the press release said.
After she was arrested, Latham confessed to firing the shot that killed Franklin but said she had only intended to fire into the car, not realizing Franklin was in the passenger seat.
Amos, lead prosecutor on the case, said the prosecution had evidence to show Latham knew she had killed Franklin that night, including more than 15 phone calls and texts made from Latham to Green leading up to the shooting, phone data showing Latham fled to Alabama immediately after the shooting to escape law enforcement and videos from multiple surveillance cameras showing Latham had sped through the streets chasing Franklin and Green before the shooting.
“I’m glad that Breanna Franklin’s family finally gets some justice and closure for Breanna’s murder,” Amos said. “It’s a tragedy for everyone involved.”
