Mississippi University for Women will be up late Aug. 3 to party against crime.
Aug. 3 is the date of the 27th Annual National Night Out, when more than 14,000 communities across North America will throw parties, cookouts or other fun events to show solidarity against crime.
“This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation,” said Matt Peskin, national project coordinator for National Night Out.
MUW is one of six Columbus sites which will participate in Night Out. Events will be held at MUW, East Columbus Gym, Charles Brown Gym, Sim Scott Park, Sandfield Community Center and the Columbus Housing Authority”s Avenue A and Avenue B.
MUW is also the only Mississippi university registered as a National Night Out site.
“We decided to participate because we knew it would be good for the campus and surrounding community,” said Juvante Burks, crime prevention and community relations director for the MUW Police Department. “Our services are not just limited to the inside of the gate.”
MUW and other Night Out sites around Columbus will participate from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 3. Activities planned at MUW include safety and crime prevention tips, inflatables and games for the kids, a Zumba dance demonstration, food and more.
Rhonda Sanders, community relations officer for the Columbus Police Department, said MUW”s participation will create crime awareness on campus and its surrounding neighborhood.
“This will result in broader participation and it”s important that students be educated about campus safety,” said Sanders.
