Elementary-aged students struggling with reading have an extra opportunity over the summer to receive literacy remediation at Mississippi University for Women.
MUW’s Speech and Hearing Center has launched a four-day summer camp called Camp LIT (Literacy in Turner) that will be June 26-29 from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day.
There are 20 spots available for children ages six to 12 and will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis providing that those who signed up are behind grade-level in reading, Interim Department Chair and Clinic Director of Speech-Language Pathology Ashley Alexander told The Dispatch in an email.
“Twenty-six SLP graduate students and 2-3 (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) certified SLPs will work the camp,” Alexander said. “The graduate students will provide one-on-one therapy sessions with the students as they have all been trained in intensive literacy instruction and have all provided this instruction in the past year.”
The camp has a nonrefundable $30 fee, but Alexander said there are limited funds available for individuals who need assistance.
Each day, participants will engage in two 45-minute therapy sessions utilizing the Barton Reading and Spelling System. These sessions will be complemented by a range of literacy-based activities, including crafts, outdoor play and snacks, all aligned with the camp’s ocean theme, a MUW press release said.
“The Barton Reading and Spelling System was created by Susan Barton…,” Alexander said. “It is a multi-sensory, direct, explicit, structured and sequential intense reading and spelling intervention program that is research- and evidence-based and has been shown to improve the reading skills of students who suffer from a learning disability in the area of reading.”
Upon completion of the camp, participants will have received a total of six hours of therapy, equivalent to six weeks of therapy sessions.
