Lauren Gamblin has always had a green thumb.
The 20-year-old from Akron, Ohio knew early on she wanted to study the art and science of plants and eventually work with the photosynthesizing creatures.
This summer, she does both.
On top of summer horticulture classes at Mississippi State University, Gamblin, works at Smith Landscaping in Columbus four days a week, where she does “a little bit of everything.”
Gamblin says she sells plants, helps customers choose plants, cares for the plants and even unloads incoming shipments.
She began working at the nursery and landscaping business in March, after she heard about the job opportunity through MSU’s Horticulture Club, where she served as president.
According to Gamblin, Smith Landscaping offers a laid-back atmosphere in which she gains firsthand experience. The experience is her favorite part of the job.
“You learn things in school, but it doesn’t actually sink in until you’re working with the plants hands-on and learning the aspects of the business,” says Gamblin.
Gamblin seems to have a special affinity for flora. She talks of the plants she raises on the small patio of her home in Starkville. She primarily grows herbs and vegetables, edible plants, because she lacks space. Her favorite plant to grow is rosemary.
Gamblin says the perks of her job feed her love for all things plants.
“I get way too much stuff [at Smith Landscaping],” laughs Gamblin. “Most of my paycheck just comes right back.”
The rising senior says she has not decided where she will end up after completing her undergraduate degree, but she has found her calling.
“This is pretty much what I want to do,” says Gamblin. “I think [this job] is preparing me to open [a nursery] of my own somewhere else.”
