Students from the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science will be among a group of 19 teams competing in a regional competition that is part of the National Science Bowl at Mississippi University for Women Friday.
High school students from around the state will descend on MUW Friday for a series of Jeopardy-like questions relating to science. At the end of the competition, one team will emerge as the winner and be awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national competition April 25-29. The students competing on Friday are only a few of the 1,500 teams vying for the top spot in the highly competitive meet.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the annual competition is entering its 23rd year.
Dirk Fillpot, the spokesperson for the Office of Science said more than 225,000 students have participated in the competition since its conception.
“The Office of Science is hosting this competition in order to encourage today’s youth to pursue careers in science and math,” he said.
In the coming months, approximately 9,500 high school students will compete in 70 high school regional Science Bowl tournaments.
