A mother and her week-old baby went to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for a checkup this morning after their 1997 Ford Mustang slid into a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Seventh Street North and Willowbrook Road in front of Heritage Academy High School.
Roderick Jefferson, 21, said his wife, Sylvia Jefferson, 19, was driving their infant, Armoni, to a pediatrician”s appointment around when they rounded the curve on Seventh Street and slid into the rear of a 2007 Chevrolet Impala.
Terrie Songer, public information officer for the Columbus Police Department, said the accident occurred at approximately 9:21 a.m. with no injuries.
“She tried to stop, but we kept sliding,” Roderick Jefferson said. “We weren”t going fast at all.”
Lucy Payne, 47, the driver of the Impala, said she and her son, Tarvis Payne, 26, were also en route to a doctor”s appointment.
“We were at this stop sign, and they just hit us twice,” Payne said.
Because Jefferson”s car began smoking, the Columbus Fire Department was called, but no assistance was necessary.
Payne said she helped unbuckle the baby from his car seat and was surprised to find that not only was he not crying — he was still asleep.
“I”m just glad the baby was OK and they”re OK,” Payne said. “It was an accident.”
